Many people are still very outraged over the not guilty verdict, in which a white hispanic male, George Zimmerman, 29, shot & killed an unarmed African American teenager, Trayvon Martin,17, claiming it was self defense. Martin supporters took to social media demanding justice for the young man, including 3-time NBA Champion, Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat.
After the verdict was reached, he tweeted out, “Wow!!! Stunned!!! Saddened as a father!!! Some1 make sense of this verdict for me right now please!!! Don’t worry I’ll wait…

Wade then decided just tweeting about it wasn’t enough, he had to make an even bigger statement.
Just recently, Wade and his two sons, Zaire and Zion, were featured on one of the four covers that EBONY has planned for its September issue.
Wade took to Instagram to post a photo of his cover, complete with his sons donning hoodies with the phrase,
“We are Trayvon.”
I think it’s very important for athletes to speak out about injustices in America. I always say, I love when athletes are humanized and transparent because it makes them seem normal. Sometimes we as fans forget that outside of the uniform, they’re regular people just like us and we shouldn’t be surprised when they take a position on an important issue that can potentially effect us all.
What Wade did with his sons was admirable; it makes me look at him in a different light, and for that, I have a newfound respect for the superstar. I’ve always loved him as a player, but I can honestly say, I fully love him as a person. He showed a lot of moxie by honoring the young man the way that he did knowing there’s a possibility that not everyone is going to be as receptive because of their own views and opinions on the subject at hand.
Although I am not a fan of the Miami Heat, however, because of this, I will always be a fan of Dwyane “Three” Wade.
